Over the last 15 years, Charlie's adventures have taken him on dozens of major expeditions across the globe, including climbing to the summit of Mount Everest, sailing the Indian Ocean in a handmade boat, trekking across East Africa with the Maasai, attempting to swim the English Channel, and completing numerous other swims, climbs and bicycle rides around the world. Some of Charlie's published stories are available below:
Mount Everest
On May 22, 2003, Charlie climbed to the summit of Mount Everest. This acheivement was the culmination of seven years spent training and preparing. Charlie's final ascent came only after surviving some of the worst weather in the recorded history of the mountain, making two back-to-back summit attempts, spending three days without food or water, and a day without supplemental oxygen. Dispatches from Charlie's expedition are available at EverestNews.com.
The English Channel
Last August, Charlie attempted to become the first American to complete what adventurers refer to as the Peak and Pond - climbing Mount Everest and swimming the English Channel. Charlie had climbed Mount Everest in 2003 and had completed numerous ultra-marathon swims in the United States, including a first place finish in the 32nd Annual Swim Around Key West. On August 29, 2008, after waiting for nearly two weeks for suitable weather, Wittmack journeyed out into the English Channel. After nearly 7 hours of swimming and covering a distance of soome 15 miles, Charlie was pulled from the water, severely hypothermic and close to death. Over the days the followed, stories of Charlie's swim crossed the globe from the International Herald Tribune to CNN, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the San Fransisco Chronical and many more. Dispatches from Charlie's expedition are available at the Des Moines Register.
